Eating Organic

Walk into any grocery store and you’ll see it everywhere: organic. From bananas to beef to bags of candy, the label pops up constantly. But what does it really mean?
Organic food is grown without chemical fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), antibiotics, or artificial additives. These foods are never exposed to herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Instead, organic farming uses natural methods like compost, crop rotation, and biological pest control to keep soil healthy and food clean.
Strangely enough, simplifying food is actually a pretty complicated process. In order to be certified organic by the USDA, farmers must adhere to a rigorous set of guidelines.
The higher price of organic food (compared to conventional) gives many shoppers pause. At the same time, it's also important to consider the reasoning behind that price difference.
For starters, organic farming is more labor-intensive than conventional farming. Farmers will often tend to these crops by hand instead of relying on machines. They use natural pest control instead of chemical pesticides. As such, it takes more time and effort to produce organic produce.
Instead of using synthetic fertilizers or feeds, organic farms use compost, manure, and organic-approved minerals, which cost more to produce and transport. Similarly, organic farming avoids synthetic growth enhancers. Ultimately, this means that fewer crops are harvested per acre compared to conventional farms, which results in smaller crop yields overall.
Moreover, many organic farms are smaller, family-run operations. Without the massive machinery and bulk purchasing power of industrial farms, costs per crop are higher. This cost— as well as the costs of getting and maintaining the organic certification label— are often passed down to consumers.
Between the cost and the qualifications, switching to organic produce can seem overwhelming.
But it doesn't have to be.
At Simply Fresh, we believe organic shouldn’t be complicated. It shouldn’t feel like a chore to find clean, honest ingredients. You shouldn’t have to research your meals.
Organic should be simple. Accessible. Fresh.
And— believe it or not— simple and fresh are what we do best.
We hand-sift through our organic berries to make sure only the best of the best make it to our shelves. Our pastries are baked with organic flour, our burgers are made from 100% grass-fed and finished organic beef, and each of our cold-pressed juices contains two pounds of fresh, organic produce.
Because at Simply Fresh, we don’t just sell organic. We live it.
